all these Christians responding are cute. they just turn off any reception of reason and look for sound bytes to quote out of context to make the author look wrong to anyone with no brain and/or who hasn't read the article. anyway, for those saying adding a personality onto god is wrong, according to your precious story book, god made humans in his image and likeness, therefore, they were sentient and had personalities. Humans have them, so should your god. and because he is all powerful and a conglomerate of all humans, he should have the personality the author gives him. also, while genocide and famine may be caused by evil people committing so called sin, it's still either part of gods plan or free will that your god gave us. so either way, its his fault by your logic.

you have got to be kidding. why read this if you read the title anyway. regardless you restate all the points the author made and why they are flat out wrong. the author states that god is in no way merciful, as the fact that his divine plan overrides any notion of free will and the fact that Gods plan ends up murdering children, spreading pestilence, and raping people due to Gods whim. any god that does horrible stuff like that is not worthy of worship. You may say he is responsible for all the good stuff, but screw that if all the bad stuff that goes on comes with it. you have lived your life as a lie, and if you had any semblance of intellect or wisdom that you claimed your religion and god bequeathed to you, than give it up.

also, grow up and turn off your caps lock and learn to spell.

Ok, James38, you're addressing the improbability of Absolute Nothing begetting something, however, it seems equally improbable that an omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent being has simply been around forever. I mean, really-- who made him/her god? I'm serious! When you really think about- if we're to believe there is one big dude who just magically ended up in charge of- you know, EVERYTHING and sort of likes to keep a lot of distance and not really "interfere" except when he wants to get praised--I'm just not sure that puts me any more at ease. I have difficulty accepting the fact that this "perfect" thing has just existed forever and this -state of the world is the best that deity can swing right now. I don't know. I'm human and I have a finite mind--but, if we're being honest, there are a whole lot of questions on both sides that warrant further investigation/consideration. In the meantime, I will have a physicist speak at my funeral. :)

Thank you for posting this!!

Interesting that the absolutely non-religious possibility that consciousness does not originate in the activities of the brain is apparently never mentioned in these discussions.

There is absolutely no proof that awareness originates in the brain. Statements to that effect amount to a blind acceptance of a theory as fact - in other words, faith.

Delving further into this will take you into seldom charted depths of philosophical inquiry that, among other things, requires you to deal with the origin of the universe beyond the flailing of the "big bangers" who have yet to deal effectively with the source of all the energy or whatever went bang.

Hint: Get very acquainted with the idea of Absolute Nothing. It isn't easy. Then ask yourself what could have emerged from that state, and why. Further hint: Absolute Nothing is not capable of producing any form, mass, energy, wavelength, or location in space or time. Do not be fooled by the idea that the speed of light is the fastest velocity. That only applies to one part of the universe.

You were never a christian. You have not met the Lord yet. Because if you did you would be so enamored by the beauty of what He did for you that you wouldn't pull up petty things from the old testament that are ripped out of context. When the holy spirit comes upon someone it makes the things of the Lord beautiful. You have not the holy spirit.

So I think that's the first thing to note....

You were never a christian.... and it's false to say you "experienced it". Because you didn't. You might meet Christ in the future, one day, and I hope that you do.

I say this for your own benefit... because talking in the past tense about being a christian simply isn't true. It hasn't happened yet.

At the end of the day

(A) You think you're a pretty good person. Yeah maybe you've done a few things wrong.... but sometimes you ask for forgiveness, right? This is a very low standard in the eyes of God. You have to be better than that. What are you going to do when God asks for an accounting of your badness on this earth?

(B) You are on the throne of your life, not God. Let's see your rebellion for what it is. It's as if you have said to God, "I can get my own things. I don't need you."

Good luck with that.

For me, taking that path led eventually to crippling depression and near suicide. Good luck.

Again you talk as if you know the person you're debating telling me to learn more about Christianity and the Bible and meet Christians. You obviously didn't know that I went to church and believed in God and that Jesus was his son who he sent to save me and anyone else who believed. I come from a very religious family where I still ask my CHRISTIAN parents questions and they ask me, I know all those stories and parables so don't tell me to wake up. And no bad experience made me turn away I just really thought about it all. I don't hate God because how can you hate something that you don't believe exists. Do you hate unicorns or pixies? Yes I hate Christianity, I hate all religions because they claim to know something humans simply can't, they were started by men and their texts were written by men... Not God, and they all say they're right. What if Christianity is the right religion... What about the Muslims, Jews or Hindus? Should they suffer because they were born in the wrong part of the world and couldn't even hear God's word? You probably don't believe in Zeus, Horus or any gods... I'm not going to believe in someone who'll only save me if I do believe. Ironic the creator of intelligence asks us not to use it. If anyone should grow up it's you and stop believing just because from the time you were a kid they told you if you don't believe or ask questions you'll burn in torment... FOREVER!

I would encourage you to wake up, meet christians, learn a few things about the bible.

"Jealousy just to name one, the Bible again says so. Isn’t that a very petty human emotion?"
We view God through the prism of other humans .... he is not like humans. Jealousy would be petty if it were vengeful or undeserved.

God is jealous for something that is rightfully His. He gave us this wonderful, amazing, life and he wants us to conduct ourselves with morality and to have a relationship with him. When we are led away by satan, he is *rightfully* jealous that satan has seduced us.

If a man had been nothing but good to his wife and after 30 years she cheated on him-- would we not say that man was rightfully jealous?

--

"They say sin is caused by humans or they blame Satan. Well, God created both"

God didn't create sin. He gave us the option to choose sin and we chose it. And you choose sin every day. I choose sin every day.

We are like the teenager who wrecked the car and then turns to blame dad, "This is your fault for giving me the car!" Grow up. Learn a bit more about the christianity you hate so much and you might find it's pretty reasonable.
